Back to Local - Street Food with Sharon Smart

Wow! Street Food...Burgers at the Savannah

According to Sharon Smart...A good street-eating venue is around Savannah. Lots of tents, people walking, looking for their favourite food or snacks and some just soaking up the aroma and the energies. There is a wide variety of food and snacks -hamburgers, hot dogs, gyros, corn soup, bake and shark, doubles, fresh juices, pholourie, saheena, barbecue chicken, barbecue pigtail, and souse.

Getting it Right? observed along with Eating & Drinking on the Streets that some vendors got it right when it came to having their heads covered and wearing gloves,,,etc. However, some were not wearing gloves as shown in the pic above. Incidentally though, we were pleased to note that everyone was wearing head gears of some sort, mostly hats on this occasion.

Also, food badges were not always prominently displayed as it should be!

The food was tasty though...give us that...we generally get it right when it comes to favour!

Getting it right? - Even a Challenge for the International Environment (US)

Getting it Right? has US viewers...today's post is in honour of them...

Senate Report: CIA misled public on torture

According to reports from CCN...an explosive Senate report released Tuesday revealed that the CIA's harsh interrogations of terrorist detainees during the Bush era didn't work, were more brutal than previously revealed and delivered no "ticking time bomb" information that prevented an attack.

The majority report issued by the Senate Intelligence Committee is a damning condemnation of the tactics - branded by critics as torture - the George W. bush administration deployed in the fear-laden days after the Sep 11th 2001 terrorist attacks. The techniques, according to the report, were "deeply flawed", poorly managed and often resulted in "fabricated" information

Getting it Right? wishes to express heart felt sympathy for those who met with harm when the 911 attack occurred.

The thing is, it is difficult in fear-laden days to do all that is right, especially when dealing with the unknown and an imminent threat on democracy. In hind sight though, many objective views become evident and controlled discussions on values and what is humane can be the norm of the day. However, what should one do now...after the fact, when there is now no threat?

Getting if Right? would observe the international environment of the US as it seeks counsel to deal with a difficult and varying view on the inappropriate enhanced interrogation methods.

Champion the Cause - Highway Re-route Movement

May be an Agency like this in Trinidad might help!!!

Dr Wayne Kublalsingh - Hunger Strike

The Highway Re-route Movement (HRM) has to be admired.

Even as its Leader Dr Wayne Kublalsingh continues with his hunger strike beyond that which is humanly possible the impasse between the Government and the HRM continues with no resolve in sight. However, as the 2015 elections draws near it would be wise to see some kind of adequate attention from the Government.

It must be difficult to continue to hold fast to the corruption and yet satisfy the electorate. This smells of the stink of pay-off and promises at the highest level. The facts are just not yet in the public. Often though, what is in the dark comes to light.

Getting it Right? is of the view that there are facts that are not in the public domain and is hopeful that those that investigate and probe would be successful in bringing things to the light. The Government did not get it right here...it is about the people...all the people and all the issues...not just some...the good of the majority not just the minority. The red herring in the hat says he is watching...

Illegal Immigrants - National vs UN's Position

Four years ago in 2010, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told reporters that while states are entitled to regulate movement across their borders they must do so in accordance with their obligations under international law including international human rights law. Pillay further stated that irregular migrants were particularly vulnerable to abuse. Governments too often treated them purely in terms of national security, often driven by hostile domestic political pressures.

In recent times, Trinidad and Tobago (TNT) has had to take a serious look at the issue of illegal immigrants. In fact, National Security Minister Gary Griffith is quoted as saying that national security intelligence has found that there is a direct correlation to some illegal immigrants and criminal activities in TNT. He said he was not deeming all illegal immigrants as national security threats, but there are some who pose a risk to the nation and that is why the Ministry is intent on clamping down on the situation and offering regularisation of status.

Getting it Right? is of the view that the situation of illegal immigrants cannot continue to go unchecked particularly in the light of the global issues of human trafficking and the Ebola virus. As such, some attempts must be made to have the situation rectified, so going forward, entry of persons into TNT would not go unchecked.  This checking would avoid many of the social hazards both experienced by the society and the illegal immigrants themselves.

Is the Ministry of National Security getting it right? Still a little early to say...but steps are being taken in the right direction. The society is more sensitized and this forces both domestic and national responsibility. Yes!!! Steps in the right direction... Getting it Right? would be monitoring developments of the handling of illegal immigrants in Trinidad and Tobago. Stay tuned...

Monday Morning Blues - Naughty or Nice - Toy Drive not buying Christmas

Our PM made the point that despite the falling oil prices her government can afford to treat the most vulnerable, the most needy, during the Christmas time, which is one of the most blessed times of the year.

As a result, Christian churches can look forward to as much as $55 million to assist the needy during the Christmas season.

Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la, la la la!!! Deck the halls with balls of holly, fa la la la, la la laaaaaa...

Our PM assured the public that the process for the awarding of the Christmas grant would be transparent and fair, ensuring equality of treatment and no discrimination across the country. In addition, MPs would be held accountable.

So Santa K is making a list and checking it twice. There would be no naughty behaviour only nice grants for all to enjoy!!!

Getting it Right? is hoping that on this occasion the country actually gets it right!!! We would be monitoring the process. Let's see...naughty or nice...

TNT's Red Herrings against Korruption

Red Herrings...Hmmm!!!

Image result for picture of red herrings

“Korruption” vs   Revelations during recent sitting of the House of Representatives

Even while President General Ancel Roget of the Oilfields Workers Trade Union (OWTU) led the Joint Trade Union Movement's (JTUM) national march against "Korruption", our PM used Parliament privileges to suggest that he is not above board when it comes to corruption.

Interestingly though, corruption is on everyone's mind, but whether Roget is guilty of the said statements or not, does not negate the fact that corruption has to be dealt with in the Nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Especially in light of the sliding of the Corruption Index and its impact on international business negotiations.

No Red Herrings Please!!! Let us stay focus on the matter at hand. We must address corruption at all levels. It is imperative!!!

"Getting it Right?" is of the view that Parliament Privileges should only be used when the greater good would be served to the majority and not as a political propaganda to divert people's focus away from the true issue under consideration, which is "Corruption".

Did Parliament get it Right??? Nope!!!

Flashback Friday - The President's Questionable Allowance

Image result for law and order symbol

Law and Order! Where is the Order? We know that the monthly tax-free housing allowance of $28,000.00 is not payable to the holder of the Office of the President in the circumstances where appropriate accommodation is provided for by the State. In this case, Trinidad and Tobago, in the event that the adjudicators got the country under consideration incorrect.

We are now aware that the State of Trinidad and Tobago provides adequate alternative accommodation to the holder of the Office of the President at Flagstaff Hill.We are yet to know exactly what amount the State pays for this accommodation. Or may be it is free!!! Anyway, that is besides the point! The point is both is not provided, it is either the accommodation is provided or the tax-free housing amount of $28,000.00.

Is anyone going to say "faire une erreur"? Forgive me if I said it incorrectly, as I am not a student of french, but I thought that a different language might be appropriate to get the message across. I am not hearing anyone speaking English, saying, "I have made a mistake!", because apparently on one has and the law, as stated, has no effect!

Did we Get it Right? Nope!!!
